Sangamo has a long and rich history, read about it here
Sangamo is one Scotland's best-known businesses having been established in Port Glasgow since 1949. The company has a well-earned, worldwide reputation for the manufacture of ultra-reliable energy saving time switches and other control products - more than 5 million of which have been installed.
Under the name of Sangamo Weston the company was originally set up to manufacture electricity meters for the Scottish utility companies and also time switches for the UK domestic and commercial market. The meter manufacturing was soon transferred to another Sangamo site in the UK (Felixstowe) and the Port Glasgow site concentrated on the production of time switches.
In 1976 the company became part of the multi-national Schlumberger Group who are the world's leading supplier of technology and information solutions in the oil and gas industry.
The Powersaver family of controllers were introduced in 1994. A winner of two energy efficiency awards, the range is used primarily for domestic water heating applications.
In 2001 the Schlumberger RMS division was transferred to Actaris, a company specialising in meters and associated systems. Shortly after the company went through a management buy-out and reverted to its original name of Sangamo. The business was taken into private ownership at the end of November 2002 by the current shareholders.
In November 2007 Sangamo purchased Bernilight, a lighting solutions business based in the North East of England. This business became a 100% owned subsidiary of Sangamo with the whole business moving to Sangamo's Port Glasgow facility later that year. Bernilight became known as Sangamo Lighting in 2008.
June 2011 saw a management re-organisation with a focus on becoming a leading supplier of energy-saving, control and monitoring products for domestic and commercial applications.
